Saint George's Castle
National Monument located on the highest hill in Lisbon's historic centre
Its name honours Saint George, patron saint of knights and crusaders. Traces of Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Muslims attest to the ancient occupation of this strategic site, whose fortification dates back to the 2nd century BC.
The castle was founded between the 10th and 11th centuries, when Lisbon was an important Muslim port city. In 1147, the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, conquered the castle and the city from the Moors.
Today, it offers breathtaking views, a museum dedicated to the history of Lisbon and green areas full of species typical of the Iberian Peninsula.
