National Palace of Belém
A National Monument with five centuries of history
The National Palace of Belém is currently the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic. Built in the 16th century by King Manuel of Portugal, it was acquired by King João V in 1726 as a summer estate. Over the centuries, it has undergone several transformations and stands out for its grandeur and elegance.
This monument has witnessed remarkable moments in Portuguese history, from the royal family's survival of the 1755 earthquake to its adaptation as the seat of the Presidency of the Republic following the establishment of the Republic in 1910.
Situated in a privileged location in Belém, the palace is part of the rich history and architecture of the area and is also surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is a symbol of national sovereignty and a landmark of interest for both Portuguese and international visitors.
