Monument to the Discoveries
A tribute to Portuguese navigators and the Age of Discovery
The Monument to the Discoveries, located in Belém, was built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition and made permanent in 1960 to celebrate the fifth centenary of Infante Henrique’s death.
At 52 metres high, the monument represents a caravel led by the Infante, followed by 32 personalities who contributed to the Discoveries, such as Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral. Its imposing architecture and location by the Tagus River reinforce Portugal's symbolic connection to the sea and maritime exploration.
The Monument to the Discoveries also offers a unique cultural and visual experience. From its belvedere, accessible by lift, you can admire panoramic views over Belém, the Tagus River and its neighbouring monuments, making it a must for anyone exploring Lisbon.
