Jerónimos Monastery
Manueline masterpiece and World Heritage Site
The Jerónimos Monastery is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and an unavoidable symbol of Portugal's history and culture. Commissioned by King Manuel I in 1501, it was built to commemorate the Age of Discovery and acknowledge the success of the Portuguese maritime expeditions and stands out for its rich detail and grandeur.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery includes the Manueline church, where figures such as Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões rest, and the 16th century cloister, considered one of the most beautiful examples of Renaissance art. This monument reflects the prosperity and ambition of Portugal during the 15th and 16th centuries.
