Estrela Basilica
One of the most important 18th century monuments in Lisbon
This National Monument, inaugurated in 1789, is a simplified replica of the Convent of Mafra, built by Queen Maria I in fulfilment of a vow she made for the birth of her son, King José.
Its huge white dome marks the profile of the city. From it, you can enjoy views of the Tapada da Ajuda, Monsanto and the Serra de Sintra. Its interior, decorated with white, yellow, pink, blue and black marble, houses the magnificent tomb of the queen who had it built. You can also see the marvellous crib by Machado de Castro (18th century), with 500 cork and terracotta figures.
The exterior features an imposing façade made up of a two-storey central body, flanked by two bell towers, and the juniper that allows you to enjoy a magnificent view over Lisbon.
