Cristo Rei
This monument offers a unique experience to those who visit it
Cristo Rei, in Almada, is one of the most recognisable icons of the Lisbon region, with a panoramic view over the Tagus and the city. Inspired by the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, in a context of reconstruction and hope after the Second World War, it symbolises faith and welcome with its open arms.
Inaugurated in 1959, the monument was funded by a national campaign and built on a pedestal with four pillars representing the cardinal points. The statue, 28 metres high, rests on a base that raises the whole to 113 metres, offering a striking presence in the landscape.
Cristo Rei is an unmissable monument, with a lift that takes visitors to the top, where they can enjoy an unforgettable view of Lisbon and the Tagus. The surrounding gardens create a serene atmosphere, ideal for moments of contemplation and reflection.
