Belém Tower
UNESCO World Heritage Site
It was built in the 16th century by order of King Manuel I to protect Lisbon during the Age of Discovery. It served both as a gateway to the city and as a defence system against possible invasions and attacks from the Tagus.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the tower stands out for its privileged location by the river and its architectural details, such as the watchtowers, ornamental sculptures and firing positions adapted for maritime defence. These elements reflect the fusion of military functionality and artistic beauty.
Today, the Belém Tower is a must-see for anyone visiting Lisbon, offering a journey through Portugal's maritime history and breathtaking views of the Tagus and the south bank. It is a living testimony to Portuguese expansion and the country's connection to the ocean.
