25 April Bridge
One of the main axes connecting the banks of the Tagus
Built between 1962 and 1966, it was initially designed for road traffic, but was adapted in 1999 to include rail, making it an example of versatile and innovative engineering.
Often compared to San Francisco's Golden Gate, due to its aesthetic similarity and the same manufacturer, the bridge is actually inspired by the Bay Bridge, also in San Francisco. The main towers rise 190 metres above the water, supporting one of the largest trusses in the world, and guarantee a navigational height of 70 metres to accommodate large ships in the port of Lisbon.
This iconic symbol of the capital combines functionality with grandeur, linking the banks of the River Tagus. It is a striking element of the urban landscape and a point of interest for anyone visiting Lisbon.
